Merv Griffin And Prostate Cancer

For many people, prostate cancer is a fact of life, but they might not realize that it is an extremely pervasive one.  The truth is, this disease is one that is found almost everywhere in the world.  Though it is least common in South and East Asia, it still has a presence and though many men who suffer from it feel deeply isolated, there are many celebrities who have been diagnosed with this disease.

When thinking about prostate cancer, it is important to recognize it as a cancer that attacks the prostate gland, which is a part of the male reproductive system.  When the cells of this gland start to multiply and mutate in a way that causes it to spread, it can cause very severe symptoms in the men that it attacks.  This is a disease that is only found in men, and it is generally accepted that men of African descent living in America are the group most at risk; in fact, it is the most prevalent form of cancer found in men in the United States.

For many men, prostate cancer is found during a physical examination or during a blood test.  In many cases, this diagnosis is confirmed through a removal of a piece of the prostate, a process known as a biopsy, and further examination under a microscope.  There are many different treatments for prostate surgery, and different ones are recommended depending on the age and health of the patient, while keeping the spread of the cancer in mind.  Radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, chemotherapy and surgery can all be used, and many men who have experienced prostate cancer will go on to live out the full spans of their lives quite healthily.

Merv Griffin, who was a famed band singer in addition to producing the famous shows Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune suffered from prostate cancer.  He was originally treated for this condition in 1996, but in 2007, he suffered a recurrence of the condition.  Both instances of the cancer were discovered during routine medical checkups.  Griffin died at the age of 82 from this illness.  Despite his illness, he still lived a long life.

As you can see, prostate cancer is a problem that can affect any man, so make sure that you are taking the precautions that you should and getting routine checkups with this in mind.  There are many different viewpoints on cancer, but as always, early detection gives you the best chances for a full recovery.
